The Firing Mechanism

  2. A small amount of water is injected via a screw-valve
  3. Instant conversion of water to steam creates massive pressure buildup
  4. The pressure propels the cannonball out of the muzzle with "great noise and violence"

Leonardo calculated the required water-to-steam expansion ratio centuries before the formal laws of thermodynamics were established. The Architronito is essentially a steam engine weaponized — the same principle that would power the Industrial Revolution.
