Leonardo took the classical proportional canon of Vitruvius as his starting point, then expanded and corrected it through empirical observation. Where Vitruvius said the foot is 1/6 of total height, Leonardo's own measurements yielded 1/7. Where ancients offered a single ideal, Leonardo advised measuring many men and finding the graceful average — an early form of statistical thinking.

Key Innovations

1. Empirical Averaging

Leonardo wrote: "If you tell me I may be mistaken, and find a man well-proportioned who doesn't conform to this division, I answer that you must measure many men of 3 braccia in height, and out of the majority who are alike, choose the most graceful and take your measurements." This is essentially early statistical methodology — a search for the ideal that emerges from nature rather than being inherited from books.

2. Dynamic Proportion

Unlike static ratio lists, Leonardo studied how proportions change with pose and growth. He noted that a three-year-old child is half the height of an adult. He analyzed how the body's center of gravity shifts when the legs spread or bend — effectively founding biomechanics. The lost Codex Huygens (a posthumous copy of Leonardo's notes) contains diagrams of figures in motion with proportional annotations.

3. Cross-Species Canons

Leonardo applied Vitruvian thinking to animals. For the never-completed Sforza Horse, he measured specific horses (including "Messer Galeazzo's big genet") and established an equine proportional canon using head lengths as the unit — unprecedented in art or science.

Vitruvian Man

The icon of human proportion. Leonardo solved a problem that had eluded all previous illustrators of Vitruvius: how to fit one figure in both a circle and a square. His solution — two superimposed positions, with legs spread for the circle and together for the square — was a brilliant visualization. He even subtly altered the anatomy to make the geometry work. The result is not a rigid diagram but a living study: veins, muscles, and distinct facial features show Leonardo used a real model.

The Last Supper

1495–1498 · Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan

A masterclass in compositional proportion. The twelve apostles divide into four groups of three. Christ forms a nearly equilateral triangle at center. The room's architectural dimensions are in harmonic ratio to the figures' arrangement. Even the table is proportioned so that all 13 figures array without crowding or excessive gaps. Leonardo applied musical harmony to visual composition.
