Overview

Giovanni Ambrogio de Predis was the indispensable local partner for Leonardo’s first decade in Milan. Already an established court painter to Ludovico Sforza, he provided Leonardo with a residence upon his arrival and secured the prestigious commission for the Virgin of the Rocks from the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception.

In April 1483, Leonardo and the brothers Ambrogio and Evangelista de Predis signed a contract for an elaborate altarpiece; Leonardo was tasked with the central panel, while the de Predis brothers handled the musical angels for the side panels. The relationship was dominated by a 25-year payment dispute.

In the early 1490s, de Predis and Leonardo petitioned the Duke of Milan, claiming that the original 200 ducat fee barely covered their expenses for materials. This litigation eventually led Leonardo to sell the first version of the painting elsewhere and necessitated the creation of the second version (now in London).

Technical analysis of the London panel suggests that de Predis painted large sections of it, including the "fanciful" rock formations that lack Leonardo’s geological accuracy, and the musical angels which are securely attributed to him.

As a portraitist, de Predis maintained a "conservative" Milanese style, often focused on meticulously detailed jewelry and profile views, as seen in his Portrait of a Man (Brera). However, his proximity to Leonardo led to significant stylistic merging; works like the Girl with Cherries are still debated as either his or Boltraffio's.

His role in the Sforza court provided Leonardo with the political cover needed to navigate the complex local patronage networks.

Why It Matters

Ambrogio de Predis provides the most extensive documentary record of Leonardo’s workshop collaboration; the contracts and petitions he co-signed are the primary evidence for the division of labor and financial realities of a High Renaissance studio.
